Ms. LIS into the Future!

Syracuse University Seal
So, it's been a little while since my last post. Here's a little disclosure. I started this blog as an application to a Library Science scholarship at Syracuse University. I didn't get that scholarship, but I got a different one, which is still pretty great.

Get BPL book reccos by email

If you're planning a Spring Break trip, thinking ahead to your summer reading list, or looking for ideas for your book club, Brooklyn Public Library has some great suggestions. Many public libraries offer book suggestions online, but I was totally impressed recently with the themed book lists available at the BPL website.

Electronic Reading

I am an avid reader.  What’s more, I primarily read on my morning commute, which involves at least two subway lines (sometimes two subways and a bus), and I’ve long considered how much more convenient it may be to use an electronic reader rather than lug paper books in my bag to and from work each day.   But with three readers competing in the market and many more on the way, which one should I choose?

Library School update

I received my 2nd Library School acceptance today - to University of Pittsburgh.  While that is of course great news, it is actually causing me a great deal of stress!  Having a choice of top schools means a lot of legwork in the next couple of weeks on my part.

Greenpoint Library Friends news

This evening was the regularly scheduled meeting of the Greenpoint Library Friends group, and I was elected treasurer! I'm honored that my fellow members have welcomed me to the executive board of the group.

The Greenpoint Friends also have great Spring events coming up, so mark your calendars. [Details]

Why Library School?

For me, the decision to go to library school was a relatively recent revelation, representing a huge change in career and lifestyle. This has led many of my friends and relatives to ask me, "You want to be a librarian? Why?"

This is the story behind my decision.

Donate books to a NOLA class!

Recently, The Desk Set held a Mardi Gras-themed book drive and fundraiser to benefit the A.P. Tureaud school in the 7th ward of New Orleans.

While the event was successful for a stormy Tuesday night, the school still needs plenty of books - including a personal favorite of mine, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

On my way

I am absolutely giddy!  I received my first MLIS acceptance today – to the #3 program in the U.S. at Syracuse University.   I also have applications into University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers, and I am considering Queens College and the Palmer School at C.W. Post, but SU is definitely my first choice.  Their speedy decision is flattering and terrifying.  Now it’s really happening, and it’s up to me to make it work!
